A. Jonathan Auguste, PhD is an Associate Professor in the field of Arbovirology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Dr. Auguste currently serves as the Scientific Director for the Fralin BSL3/ACL3 labs, Director of the T32 Biomedical Graduate Student Training Program, and Associate Director of the Center for Emerging, Zoonotic, and Arthropod-borne Pathogens. Dr. Auguste’s research focuses on arbovirus surveillance and understanding the mechanisms by which insect-specific viruses are unable replicate in vertebrate cells. He is also developing novel viral-vectored vaccine platforms against important arboviruses within the Orthoflavivirus and Orthobunyavirus genera. More recently, he has focused his efforts developing animal models and creating vaccines for endemic Orthobunyaviruses that are important to public and veterinary health. He is also involved in local and international surveillance programs and focuses on screening mosquitoes and birds for arboviruses to model risk of emergence. Dr. Auguste has also contributed to the development of several SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and therapeutics, including one candidate that is in clinical use in Argentina. Dr. Auguste is very committed to graduate education and is currently accepting applications for graduate students.
